Le Cycle de Vie d'un Papillon

We were so lucky to be able to raise Painted Lady Butterflies in our classroom again this year. We got to remove the caterpillars from their shared container and move them into their own homes. We fed them, watched over them and saw them turn into chrysalises! We watched and waited patiently while they hung in their chrysalis from the top of the cage and slowly, one by one, they emerged as butterflies! We loved learning about their life cycles! We sang songs, read books, acted out stories and danced to represent the stages in their life cycle. Then the best part came- releasing them! We loved bringing the cage outside and having a 'releasing party'. We watched our friends fly into the sky, land on trees and in the grass. We will miss them!

Getting a closer look at the caterpillars!

The children are reading and retelling the story of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"

Our first chrysalis!

The children wanted to show people walking through our class the "Cycle de vie d'un Papillon" so they created a little information station.

Bryce made a list of all of the things you would need to raise caterpillars inside.

Adam made a caterpillar to hang up on our information station.

Serena made a "butterfly in a heart" to hang up on our information station.

"It's a chenille!" -Maddie

Our first butterfly emerged from his chrysalis on Thursday morning at around 8:45AM (June 11). Mlle Benneian left for five minutes and when she returned there were 2 butterflies! WOW!

This is our third butterfly, he emerged while we were out at recess about 20 minutes after the first 2 on June 11.

Some of the children watched the chrysalises hoping the butterflies would emerge for them!

We noticed more butterflies this morning, Friday, June 12.
Warren said "We had three yesterday and now we have six! That means there are three more now!"
Erica brought in flowers for Mlle Benneian and Mlle Ouellette and now the butterflies get to enjoy them too!
I see a butterfly hiding!

On Friday June 19th, we were able to release the butterflies into nature. We waved goodbye and wished them luck. We will miss watching them in our classroom but we are glad they can start their own families now.

Au revoir papillons!
