Community Helpers Week

This week we welcomed visitors to our class to talk about their jobs in the community.  We learned a lot of new things.

Mrs. Funkenhauser talked about her job as a nurse.  She works with dialysis patients and explained that she helps people who have a problem with their kidneys.  She told us that we each have 2 kidneys and showed us what they looked like.  She also brought in some items they use at her job.

 

Mrs. Funkenhauser is showing us where our kidneys are.  She told us that our kidneys are the size of our fists!

Officer Nick Goy visited us to talk about his job as a police office with the LaSalle Police.  He talked about what he does and how we can stay safe. He showed us his police truck and we got to sit inside it.

 

 

He told us that he makes sure that everyone is following the rules on the road and that cars stop where there is a stop sign. He also told us that he works with forensics, which means our fingerprints. We all have different fingerprints like snowflakes.

 



 

We got to see the police truck, see the lights, and hear the sirens!

"I made a badge. It says 'policier'!"

"I made a taser like the one the police officer had today!"

 

Mrs. Lukic told us about all the jobs there are at her work at the Public Health Unit.

 

 

We picked out items from the bag to tell us about the different roles.

The apple is for a nutritionist.

 



The spoon and fork is for health inspectors.

 



The goggles are for the inspectors that check the water in public pools.

 



The teeth and toothbrush is for dental hygienists.

 



The hat and water bottle is for sun safety and keeping hydrated by drinking water.

 



The ball is for being active.

 



 

The baby and the growth chart are for helping new moms take care of their babies.

 

 

We also learned about helmet safety.  We did an experiment with an egg.  We dropped an egg without a helmet and it cracked and broke. 

The egg with the helmet was safe and happy.

She told us how to wear a helmet properly.

 

 

 

 

She read us a book about why it is important to drink water.

 

 

 

She also showed us how plants grow and we pretended to be seeds growing as she gave us water and sunshine.

Dr. Jenny came to tell us about her job as a family doctor.  She showed us some of the tools she uses to make sure people are healthy.

Dr. Jenny taught us about germs. She did an experiment to show us how germs can spread. We put lotion on our hands then sprinkled glitter on our hands.  We touched our hands together down the line and saw how far the germs (sparkles) could travel.  We also saw that those germs that we made from coughing or sneezing can be transferred to our toys and other objects in the classroom.

 

The LaSalle Fire Department came to talk to us about fire safety.  We got to see the fire truck and the equipment that the firefighters use.

 



Mrs. Vlad taught us about her job at the Brighton Beach Power Plant. She showed us  pictures of the power plant and explained where our power comes from. She told us what power is and what we use that needs power. 

 

We loved looking at the pictures of the factory.

 

She gave us a special workbook and some pencils to take home to share with our families.
