Geometry - Exploring Shapes

In the past two weeks, we have been learning about two-dimensional shapes. We have discussed how many sides they have, how many corners they have, and whether their sides are straight or curved. We have searched for objects in our environment that take the form of these shapes as well.

We have also been exploring shapes through play by making pictures with shape magnets, making things using shape blocks, writing shape books, singing songs, making drawings and posters, and by making shapes on geoboards using elastic bands.

Finally, we also learned a shape song that your child should be able to sing to you!  You can help your child see how shapes are part of our everyday life by pointing out shapes you see at home or while you are out. You can solidify their understanding of what makes up these shapes by discussing their attributes (i.e.. How do you know that shape is a square?  It has four sides, it has four corners, all the sides are the same length, it is a square.).

Shapes in French:

Square: Carré
Rectangle: Rectangle
Triangle: Triangle
Diamond: Losange
Oval: Ovale
